By Sarah Steelman It is hard to believe that after over 11 trillion dollars has been injected into the economy through bail out schemes, earmarks, new government programs and projects and after all the incessant discussion about how government is the answer to all our financial woes, that the media, Congress and even the President of the United States have all forgotten the greatest source of energy and solutions to our problems is the people of this great country. The history of our country in itself is a testimonial to the strength and courage of our people. The American Revolution was fought by courageous men and women who loved liberty. The immigrants that came to America were not “yearning to be taken care of by government programs” - they came here dedicated to working hard and “yearning to be free”. The pioneer spirit of Americans who uprooted their families and moved west were not wimps – they wanted a new life for their families. They lived off the land and were willing to make life better for their families by investing every penny, every ounce of sweat, and sometimes sacrificing their own life to build a new home and a new community. They did not sit around and wait for the government to give them an economic stimulus check. The shining city upon the hill that John Winthrop and later Ronald Reagan referred to was not Washington DC. The shining city upon the hill was every town in America where the people care for each other, nurture dreams, create jobs for their communities, participate in their schools, volunteer as coaches for kids and meals on wheels, attend church and keep an eye on their neighbors to make sure they are cared for and safe. The American spirit is going to pull us out of this economic disaster in spite of the efforts of Congress and Washington elites. We know what works in this economy. Empowering entrepreneurs to harness their energy and build and rebuild their businesses. Allowing families to save or spend depending upon their own needs. It is ordinary people - individuals – who have struggled every day, for years and years and decades and centuries who raise families, build business and industries, and try to improve human life in countless ways who will get our economy going again. Alexis de Tocqueville said, “The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money. “ Well guess what - that day is never going to arrive even though Washington is doing all it can to try to convince us of that. The public looks at all their tax dollars going to huge companies and entities that have nothing in common with the daily lives of individual citizens and they get fired up about the irresponsibility of their government throwing taxpayer money at every problem, running up record deficits and allowing businesses and people who made bad decisions to be rewarded. It’s pretty simple really – are these the principles that you would teach your kids to follow: Don’t be accountable for your mistakes; don’t pay back your debts; money will solve all your problems; always rely on someone else to get you out of a bad situation; and never say no. Of course not. The American people know better. The fact is our government has no power except that which the people grant it. We have drifted from that principle but the American spirit remains strong. Let’s unleash the energy, the ingenuity and the kindness found in the hearts of every American spirit. That is what has always made the difference. And until we the people remind Washington of that we will be “bribed with the public’s money” into moral and financial bankruptcy. I am betting on the American people. |
